Love, grief, Godzilla...and one very weird winter at the beach.

Zara Kegg spends her nights in the projection booth of a fading seaside theater, running old black-and-white monster movies for whoever still shows up. It’s a good place to hide—especially after her mother’s death, with her father drifting further out of reach. Up there in the dark, with the hum of the projector and the flicker of the screen, she doesn’t have to explain anything.

Then Zachary Taylor walks in.

His clothes don’t match. His stories don’t always add up. But something about him feels familiar, and before long, Zara finds herself paying closer attention than she means to.

What begins as something like a love story turns into something harder to name. They circle what isn’t being said, sometimes getting close, sometimes missing it entirely. What’s on the surface isn’t always what’s there.

The Reel Life of Zara Kegg - Trailer

"Barkley’s realistic portrayal of  romance, family, mental  illness, and grief are as authentic as it comes for teen literature. ... Zara Kegg is a memorable character, and the story is thoughtful...a valuable addition to a realistic fiction  collection and comparable to books by John Green and Jeff Zentner.

School Library Journal

“Like John Green at his very best, Barkley creates teenage characters who are every bit as rich, complicated, and compelling as adults. This is a writer who has mastered the art of finding the sweet spot where comedy and tragedy meet.”

-Susan Perabo

Author of The Fall of Lisa Bellow

“ I fell in love with “Zara with a Z” the moment I met her and I fell in love with Zachary the moment he entered the story as well. But this is not simply a meet-cute teen rom-com.... All I can say is: Read it! I gulped down this book in one sitting because I simply could not stop turning the pages..."

“In The Reel Life of Zara Kegg, Brad Barkley has created a cast of wonderfully weird characters who are trying, like all of us, to find their way in this confusing world of ours.”
